Moving from Idea to Impact

Join us as we reflect on our growth journey over the past ten years since launching our first program. Then, look ahead with us at the exciting possibilities for what we can accomplish together in the coming years.

Idea

In 2011, the idea for Stanford Seed was hatched. Alumnus Robert “Bob” King, MBA '60, and Dorothy “Dottie” King conceived the audacious vision that the unique strengths of the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) could help end the cycle of global poverty. They brought their idea and an extraordinary gift to Garth Saloner, then Dean of the GSB. The three joined forces with faculty members Hau Lee, Bill Meehan, James Patell, and Jesper Sørensen, who helped shape and implement this vision.
With strong conviction and the research to back it, they knew small and medium-sized businesses are the long-term engine of shared economic prosperity. It was determined that Seed would partner with entrepreneurs in emerging markets to help them build thriving enterprises that would transform lives — from the lives of employees and suppliers to customers and communities. We would provide world-class educational programs and supportive resources to fuel their growth and scale their success.

SMEs are the backbone of sustained, broadly shared economic growth and employment in prosperous nations; this is even truer in emerging markets where SMEs represent the vast majority of private enterprises. At Stanford, we are leveraging our expertise to promote global prosperity by offering management programs and resources to help these businesses grow and succeed.”

Programs

To achieve our vision, Seed launched its first educational program, the Seed Transformation Program (STP), welcoming its first cohort of 26 participants in Accra, Ghana in 2013. Today, Seed offers four programs to address the needs of companies at varying sizes and stages of growth, providing a comprehensive and valuable continuum of support.
Seed delivers world-class business training and supportive resources to founders and CEOs in over 37 countries across Africa and South Asia, helping them increase revenues, create jobs, and positively impact people and the planet.
